Tips for Conserving Energy_ part 3

8. Invest in a programmable thermostat. According to the EnergyStar website, you can save as much as $180 per year on your energy bills, so these things pay for themselves pretty fast. By setting your heat at a lower temperature while you’re away or sleeping, you’ll see big energy savings without sacrificing comfort.
9. Cover your floors. If you have tile or hardwood floors, you can keep things cozy by laying out an area rug, especially if you have a basement or crawlspace.

10. Don’t turn off those ceiling fans – reverse them! I know, it sounds crazy. Why would you run your ceiling fan when it’s cold outside? Your fan is actually a great way to keep warm air circulating in your home. Most come equipped
with a switch to reverse the direction that the blades turn. By flipping the switch and setting it on low, you can use your fan to push warm air that’s trapped up at the ceiling down to the living area. If you want to go a step further, try contacting your local utility company for an energy audit. The EnergyStar website also has some great tools for assessing your home’s energy efficiency!

4. Seal around your windows and doors. Check around window and door frames for cracks or leaks where cold air could be seeping in. You can seal these up with caulk. For larger gaps, check out your local hardware store for sealing solutions.

5. Be a draft dodger. Warm air can escape under exterior doors. Seal up these areas by keeping a rolled up towel pressed against the bottom of the door, dorm-room style. If you want to get fancy, WikiHow has a great tutorial on making your own!

6. Turn down your hot water heater. Make sure it’s set to “normal” or 120 degrees. Any hotter is just a waste of energy.

7. Practice a little feng shui. Set up your rooms so that places where you sit and sleep are not near big windows or
exterior walls, wherever possible. If your sofa, bed, or desk has to be near exterior walls or a big window, you might add a little warmth and flair with some heavy curtains over that window or a cheery wall-hanging.

What alternatives do I have for heating my home?

December 11th, 2010 -

The rising electricity prices obliged us to look for other sources of heating our homes. But apart of costs, it is also a way to reduce the carbon emissions.

Solar heat and solar panels
There are many articles and good books about how to install and make the most of solar panels. The sun, for sure, can be a great source of heating your home. Install a solar hot-air collector panel on your house
exterior. the best location is the south-facing wall. But you will also have to have in mind the sun movement through winter months to find out the best location for our house.

Also the design of your house can improve the heating absorbtion. Some architects integrate the house in the landscape so that you can make use of the ambiental: a home that has a sun exposure to the front of the house it will loose less heat. Also, there are bedrooms that are builded underground because this is a great way to conserve the heat. The earth will retian it through the night.

How to Consume Less Calories

December 6th, 2010 -

So you want to lose weight but you hate dieting. You can’t stand being restricted. Having to say no to chocolate just makes you crave it all the more. Don’t worry. Here are some simple suggestions for you to consume less calories and lose weight without having to diet! Read more:

1. Drink water. If you love to drink soda, that’s fine but limit yourself to one can a day. Don’t buy 2-liters as you’ll want to continually fill that glass. Avoid caffeine. Get down to one cup a day.

2. Trade in your white bread for wheat bread. Likewise, don’t give up your pasta but try wheat noodles instead. This simple exchange will save you many calories and will also provide your family with a much healthier food option.

3. Take your time. Enjoy each bite. Chew each bite thoroughly before swallowing. This may sound overly simple but by following this step, you’ll allow the gases from digestion to rise from your stomach to your brain and avoid overeating as the gases allow you to recognize when you are full. The faster you eat, the more you can eat before you realize you are full. Also, take a sip after every two to three bites.

4. Many people confuse thirst with hunger. When you first feel hungry, drink so water. If ten minutes later, you still feel hungry, you actually are so go ahead and eat. But you’ll be surprised by the number of times your ‘hunger’ goes away. Likewise, eat more watery foods such as cucumbers. They will fill you up fast and you’ll actually consume less calories by eating them instead of other heavier food options.

6. Whenever possible, buy portion sized. Buy individual chip bags instead of the large family size. Instead of having just one more chip (which always turns into much more than just one!), you are forced and limited to a smaller amount.

7. If you always clean your plate, try to leave a bite or two. Knowing when to stop eating is important. Also, when you go out to a restaurant, immediately ask for a box. When your meal arrives, put half into the
box. Out of sight, out of mind and not into your mouth. Now you have lunch for the next day and won’t have to worry about overeating or stuffing yourself with the huge portions that all restaurants serve.

8. Make sure you eat breakfast! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it jumpstarts your metablism. So, basically, if you eat breakfast, you’ll feel less hungry throughout the day. Another tip for cutting calories: use less spread of your toast. Just doing something so small and simple equals less calories and the fewer calories you take in, the better!
